Jemima Burrill

Jemima Burrill is interested in how art and culture can change perception and create unexpected and significant reactions. How the audience can take part, create networks whilst animating place. Through her PR experience, she understands the power of art and design to weave culturally interesting and grounding stories that create communities.
In 2015 Burrill helped conceive and create NOW Gallery, a free public exhibition space bringing design, art and fashion to a unique and unusual gallery space. Increasing creative awareness, bringing audiences and publicity to a new area of London – Greenwich Peninsula. During her 10-year tenure as curator and culture consultant, Molly Goddard, Charles Jeffrey, Camille Walala, Emmanuelle Moureaux, and many others constructed significant unprecedent installations in the gallery.
An interactive dimension is often intrinsic to encouraging all to take part in the exhibition and extend dwell time. JeeYoung’s origami, Studio Morison’s library, Simone Brewster’s stamps – ensure that the local audience and beyond, are able to engage with the installation. There is clear evidence that beyond the more static exhibitions, our live events stimulate curiosity and add a new audience and are integral to our programming.
Permanently nesting on the Peninsula are three art commissions which bring joy to many. Seating by Raw Edges – Steps – a dwelling pace on Peninsula Square. Concrete seats for two of differing sizes that fill the expanse outside the tube station with presence and snugness.
Studio Morison have meanwhile created a 60-seater picnic table – Seafood Disco – featuring shells and coconuts for residence and others to sit and watch the River Thames go by. Working with these two designers to imagine an area for people to settle and enjoy the riverside.
Most recently a project close to Burrill’s heart culminating in a Birdwatching logbook by Jennifer Moore to raise money for the Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park. Harnesses the power of art to bring an environmental issue to life, encouraging wellbeing by creating opportunities for communities to come together and enjoy the great outdoors. Realising that in developing place, biodiversity to encourage bird habitat and cherishing wildlife is key.
Burrill currently hosts a talk series CREATIVE BOOST on Instagram Live, interviewing creatives about inspirations and their creative process. With her collaboration with amongst others The V&A, The Barbican, TFL, Tate Modern, The Royal Opera House, The Arvon Foundation, The Architecture Foundation, The Serpentine and The Arts Council her cultural reach extends. She studied at the Royal College of Arts and Chelsea Art School which is central to an understanding and appreciation of the art and design world.
