Perhaps best known for her ambitious and unapologetically bold site-specific interventions, artist and designer Camille Walala’s work is synonymous with the recent rise in appetite for increasingly bright and graphic approaches towards art in public spaces. Initially influenced by the Memphis Group aesthetic she has through her studio managed to reframe both the possibilities and our understanding of playful public environments. In 2016 this was realised in the WALALA x PLAY exhibition at NOW Gallery, a fully immersive maze of colourful patterns contorted into a surrealist world of unexpected walls and mirrors.

During this one hour In Conversation with NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill will explore Walala’s love of colour, what influences her choice of bright tones and how she combines them to create her vibrant work. We will have the opportunity to take a look into her studio, talk about her new diminutive sculptures and discuss how having the opportunity to think during lockdown creates space for a more creative and personal practice.

This talk is the first instalment of a new four-part series of online conversations taking place on Zoom with artists, designers and creative practitioners interrogating our relationship with colour and in turn how it shapes our experiences and environment. About Camille Walala

Known for her ambitious, large-scale and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces, Camille Walala uses the man-made landscape as a platform for disseminating positivity. Her work encompasses full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors and set design – characterised by a fusion of bold colours and playful geometric patterns. Since her ‘Dream Come True Building’ burst onto the Shoreditch streetscape in 2015 and thrust her into the spotlight, Camille and her creative producer, Julia Jomaa, have been engaged in an increasingly bold roster of international projects. These have included collaborations with leading global brands – such as LEGO, for whom she created the HOUSE OF DOTS; the creative direction of the groundbreaking Mauritian hotel SALT of Palmar; and a slew of major installations for events like NYC’s WantedDesign and London Design Festival – including Walala Lounge, a complete suite of semi-permanent street furniture that transformed South Molton Street, Mayfair, into a corridor of colour. Camille finds inspiration in community and collaboration, and the power of colour and pattern to transform atmospheres, elevate moods and spark positivity.
